Ego and the Chakras | Print |  Email

The ego is the limited, unimaginative mind taking charge of your life and your decision making process. When your attention is in the lower three chakras, the cycle of struggle, your mind will perceive reality through its self-imposed challenges. For example, anger is a strong mental reaction to life-as-it-is. Instead of looking for a solution to a challenging situation, you see only how life is not cooperating with your plans. "Man proposes, God disposes."

When your attention rises to the heart chakra, so does the ego. The ego and Self sit side by side each other as, say the Upanishads, two birds sitting on the same branch. One bird seeks pleasures and avoids pain, the other simply enjoys whatever the panorama of life has to reveal. When meditating on the Self, it is easy for a beginner to become confused with which bird they are listening to. This is an essential point for which there are many exercises in the book Meditation Magic.

When your attention rises to your higher chakras in order to use the mind as an instrument of the Self, or if the kundalini rises as a result of pure contemplation of the Self, then no ego is involved. If, however, you consciously bring your attention out of the Heart to accomplish some selfish material or psychic goal, then the ego is dominating.

Why settle for a mirage when you can drink the waters of immortality?
Why look at the phantom universe when you can be the Universe?

For example, if you bring your attention away from the Self’s natural home in the Heart (the Soul, not the heart chakra) and meditate on the third eye in order to see light, talk to an astral guru, or experience some other psychic phenomenon, you will only lead yourself into more delusions. Visual phenomena reflect your intentions.

Contemplation of Self will raise the kundalini naturally. Many psychic visions and powers will come to you as a natural consequence as a result of pure intentions. If you stop and play with these powers, spiritual progress stops—perhaps for a very long time. This is why mystics of all paths give grave warnings about playing in the psychic realm. There are many natural (non-ego based) uses for psychic abilities as you progress. You will find that, generally, your life will have fewer material stresses, money will never be a concern, and you will be able to help many people without egoic effort.
